Weda Bay, a strategic source of ore and a major focus of the energy transition.
Weda Bay Nickel, in which Eramet is a co-shareholder, is an integral part of the Group’s strategy to support the energy transition in a sustainable way by providing leading-edge solutions to meet the needs of the new metals era.
The Weda Bay Nickel mine, located on the island of Halmahera in northeast Indonesia, recently went into production in 2019. As part of a partnership with the Chinese steel group Tsingshan, the world’s leading producer of stainless steel and the majority shareholder of PT Weda Bay Nickel, Eramet brings its technical and operational expertise on the mining operations.
Senior Safety Superintendent - Mining operations W/M
Responsibilities :
Mining Safety Management and Compliance
- Promote a strong safety culture across all Mining operations.
- Design, implement, and improve risk-control measures in line with Safety Management System and regulatory requirements in all Mining areas.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and audits, ensure follow-up and closure of actions.
- Develop, update and ensure application of Mining Safety Procedures and Risk Assessments.
- Lead and monitor speed-control programs and fatigue-management initiatives.- Lead incident investigations and root cause analyses, ensuring preventive actions are implemented.
- Update and communicate Safety Risk Maps and risk assessment results across the operation.
- Ensure compliance with local regulations and safe operation for WBN and contractors.
Leadership, Coaching and Collaboration
- Collaborate with Operations, Dispatch, Maintenance, and Contractors for consistent safety standards across the Mining area.
- Lead, coach, and mentor Safety Supervisors and Officers to build competence and ensure effective execution.
- Serve as a Safety Partner and Challenger to operational leaders and contractors, providing guidance and constructive feedback to enhance safety performance and culture.
- Partner with operations to monitor compliance, conduct risk assessments and follow up on safety actions.
- Facilitate Safety Leadership sessions, toolbox talks, and coaching activities on critical risks.
Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting
- Monitor and report KPIs on Mining safety (near misses, deviations, speed compliance, inspection closure, incident trends).
- Conduct regular field audits and inspections to verify compliance and identify improvement opportunities.
- Present monthly safety performance reports and recommend improvements to Mine Safety Manager.
- Analyze safety data and use insights to guide prevention and behavioral change initiatives and prepare monthly performance reports with key insights and recommendations.
- Use data-driven findings to guide preventive measures and promote positive behavioral change.
Team Leadership and Safety Culture
- Lead and manage the Mining safety team in achieving safety objectives.
- Attend meetings within Safety Department and also with Mine Operations and Contractors
- Ensure effective communication (top-down and bottom-up) of safety priorities.
- Identify and coordinate training and competency development needs for the Mining safety team and contractor personnel.
About you:
- B.Sc. or master’s degree Mine Engineering or health and safety or related discipline,
- Minimum 10 years combined experience in mining operations or Resources Industry
- Minimum 5 years of experience at a managerial level and multicultural environment
- Experience in working in a large multi-pit mine with numerous contractors
- Proven experience in managing Safety in mining Operations
- Hands-on experience in contractor safety management, fleet safety, and behavior-based safety programs.
- Experience working in a remote mining site or FIFO environment preferred.
- Prior exposure to multicultural and multilingual teams (Bahasa Indonesia, English, Mandarin) is an asset.
- Other Technical and/or Safety qualifications are advantageous (but not mandatory).
- Works with initiative and Team oriented. Possesses influential leadership skills.
- Good report writing, data management and analytical skills.
- Good understanding of risk management and associated tools to control critical risks in mining activities.
- Proven experience implementing and enforcing safety policies and procedures on the field,
- Proven experience working in a multicultural environment and in challenging and dynamic operating environments.
