Environmental Law Counsel W/M

Job Description:

 

The position is based in Paris 15th arrondissement, with occasional business trips required: 2 to 3 times per year, both nationally (Paris region / other French regions) and internationally (intercontinental).

Reporting to the Group Permitting Officer, the Environmental Law Counsel will work closely with the Group’s Environmental Department, Real Estate Department, Industrial Department, Legal Department, and with corresponding functions within subsidiaries.

 

Main Responsibilities:

 

1. Environmental Compliance and Legal Support

  • Provide legal support to operational teams (mines and plants), the Group’s Environmental and Real Estate departments on all matters related to environmental law in countries where the Group operates or explores (e.g., water, air, waste, soil, biodiversity, ICPE regulations, environmental permits and licenses, etc.).

  • Assist with site classification files, impact studies, environmental guarantees, and REACH compliance matters.

  • Contribute to regulatory and case law monitoring in operating countries.

  • Assess and anticipate legal environmental risks related to ongoing or future projects.

 

2. Management of Divested Assets and Environmental Liabilities

  • Ensure legal monitoring of environmental guarantees (post-sale obligations, liability clauses, financial guarantees, etc.) for divested sites, especially in France.

  • Collaborate with M&A teams, divested sites, and competent authorities to ensure proper execution of environmental commitments.

  • Manage litigation and pre-litigation matters related to environmental liability (historical pollution, contaminated land, compensation claims, etc.).

 

3. Cross-Functional Projects and Governance

  • Contribute to drafting and negotiating contracts with environmental stakes (e.g., asset sales, rehabilitation agreements, etc.).

  • Support the development and implementation of internal environmental risk management policies.

  • Help train internal teams on environmental obligations and best practices.

 

Profile:

  • Master’s degree (Master 2) in Environmental Law / Public Law / Business Law with a specialization in environmental issues.

  • 8 to 12 years of experience in a company, law firm, or public administration, ideally in the extractive, industrial, or energy sectors with international exposure.

  • Strong knowledge of French environmental law and international regulations relevant to the mining sector.

  • Expertise in ICPE law, contaminated sites, environmental authorization procedures, and environmental liability.

  • Excellent legal writing, analytical, synthesis, and negotiation skills.

  • Ability to work transversally with multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.

  • Interest in international work and sensitivity to environmental and social issues.

  • Fluent in English and French.
